The German Soldier
Here we will feature original photos of German soldiers in every-day life. These will be an aid to your impression. Though they are not necessarily members of 2. Panzer, all German Heer (army) soldaten shared the same attitudes, stature, composure, eating habits, etc. Learn from them, for we are representing them, the common German fighting man, to the world.

Here we will see them eating, sleeping, resting in barracks, preparing for battle, joking with comrades. Remember, these were real men, far from home and family, often for the first time. They did not want to be where they were, and wished only for a speedy end to the war. But they loved their country, their families and their fellow soldiers, and were ready to lay down their lives for all three if need be.

ESSEN!
Soldiers of all countries share one major thing in common...Hunger!
Here we feature every Landser's friend, der Goulashkonone! (goulash cannon). These mobile field kitchens provided hearty soups and stews for the men at the front. Next to mail call, nothing drew more excitement than lining up at the field kitchen, or seeing your friend arrive with a steaming hot food carrier.
Contrary to Hollywood portrayals, the German army was usually on excellent terms with local populations, often sharing food from the Goulashkanone with children and peasants, or preparing meals in local homes.

Mittagessen!

German soldiers line up for hot stew. Note the ever-present mess tins. The boy at right brings a container to take home to his family.

LEBEN
Every-day living. Barracks life, washing, singing, joking, standing in line,
exercising, marching, gunnery practice.

WAFFEN
Ordnance. Vehicles. Weapons. Gear. Soldiers took the best possible care of it all. 'Alles in Ordnung' (everything in order, all-functioning) was a matter of life and death.

Panzer IV

Panzer men became as attached to their mechanical mounts as did teamsters to their horses. This proud crew poses atop their Panzer IV.
